Brake Linings Ltd Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
The Chairman and Managing Director of Sundaram Brake Linings Ltd
(SBL), Mr. K. Mahesh, received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the
annual meeting of the Indian Society for Quality (ISQ).
The Governing Council
of the ISQ honored Mr Mahesh with the 2009 Jamsetji Tata Award in
recognition of his outstanding role in promoting the practice of quality
management at SBL and within Indian industry as a whole.
During his 36 years of
leadership at SBL, the company has won several highly prestigious
quality medals including the coveted Deming Application Prize in 2001
for the practice of Total Quality Management. His team of managers has
been instrumental in bringing to SBL various modern manufacturing
techniques including Total Quality Management (TQM), Total Productive
Maintenance (TPM) and Lean production methods.
The ISQ also recognized
Mr Mahesh in his earlier role as President of the Automotive Component
Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), as Chairman of the ACMA
Centre for Technology (ACT), for his activities with the National
Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and his
initiatives in spearheading cluster programs, first through ACMA and
then through the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
which brought the tangible benefits of quality management to hundreds of
Indian companies who now compete in global markets.
Mr Mahesh reiterated
that the “real stars of change” were his workers and managers.
First given in 2004,
the Jamsetji Tata Award is presented to industry leaders who have made a
significant contribution to Indian society by setting an exceptional
example in their tireless focus on quality.
Brake and clutch
friction material produced by SBL are widely used in commercial
vehicles, passenger cars, agricultural tractors and motor cycles. The
company is the preferred original equipment supplier to several
well-known manufacturers of axle and brake assemblies. SBL exports
friction materials to over 70 countries in all parts of the world.
The ISQ is a
not-for-profit society formed to promote the development and recognition
of professionals within the quality arena. On the international stage,
it is the face of India in the world of quality management.
